Most Popular Places and Activities to Explore in Mauritius
Le Morne
A scarcely inhabited place and mostly surrounded by hotels, Le Morne's beauty is captivating, to say the least. The Le Morne mountain, a world heritage, was originally a place designed for enslaved people to escape their enslavers. The mountains abridge tons of Mauritian history and are a definite visit to Le Morne.
During your visit to Le Morne, make sure to book a full-day tour of Southern Mauritius. Explore the downtown areas, find hidden museums and boutiques, and munch on some delicious cuisines. Go sailing on Catamaran cruises, swim with dolphins, and end your day with some delicious BBQ.
Try and be flexible with your schedules and days in Le Morne. One day won't be enough, so at least stay in Le Morne for 2-3 days to explore the peninsula fully.
Chamarel
Chamarel is a small village that homes the highest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius. Located in the district of Savanne, Chamarel is a unique destination with striking views you won't be able to find anywhere else. Chamarel also consists of the seven-colored Earth, made up of sand dunes and varying colors,
including red, brown, and purple. It happens due to the cooling of volcanic rocks, making it a wonderful experience.
Chamarel is a busy town filled with history, culture, adventure, and several attractions. Explore the Ebony Forest, stroll across the curious corner, or take a walk along the black river gorges national park. Chamarel might not offer you the same experience as a busy city, but it will surely not disappoint.
Blue Penny Museum
The blue penny museum was named after the infamous Mauritian one and two penny stamps from 1847. The museum has a diverse and interesting variety of exhibits portraying the island's history, settlement, and a reflection of the colonial period. It offers an excellent learning experience with a particular focus on the Paul and Virginie legend.
The famous stamps on the museum's first floor are Mauritian national treasures. The authorities are cautious with their handlings, so much so that they are only lit for 10 minutes every hour to preserve their color.
Grand Baie
Grand Baie, once a mere fishing village, is now a main tourist hub on the island. Often referred to as Le Trop, the place has a lot to offer, including beaches,
attractions, and excursions.
Make your trip to Grand Baie unforgettable by visiting the Grand Bay beach, strolling through Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, searching for the perfect souvenir at the Port Louis market, and spending the restful day at the Merville beach. For water activity enthusiasts, Grand Baie has a range of activities to offer, including water skiing, diving, sailing, and windsurfing.
Mont Choisy Beach
Mont Choisy beach is Mauritius' most visited beach in the northern region. It is close to the airport and, hence, easily accessible by bus or cab. It is the perfect spot for nature lovers seeking a relaxing and peaceful experience in Mauritius.
The views of Mont Choisy beach are mesmerising. Many water activities include fishing, swimming with dolphins, parasailing, and much more. For a
hassle-free trip, you can book private tours with guides, transport, and food accommodations. However, Mont Choisy beach would be an excellent destination to test out your spontaneity and go with the flow.
Eureka
Eureka is a well-preserved French colonial mansion located at the island's center, close to Moka. Eureka once belonged to the island's most prominent sugar baron and was later converted into a museum.
Adorned with luxuriously preserved old furniture, rooms in Eureka truly depict the French East India Company heritage. The house has 109 doors, a massive
balcony, and turreted rooftop windows. Inside you'll find a strange shower contraption that was once a rare luxury owned by the most prestigious individuals. The courtyard behind consists of gardens filled with bamboo and ebony, followed by a swimming hole underneath a waterfall.
