Must See and Do in Muscat
Most Popular Places and Activities to Explore in Muscat
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Sultan Qaboos grand mosque is the most renowned tourist attraction in Muscat. The Sultan Qaboos Mosque is Oman’s biggest mosque covering an area of over 416,000 m2.
It is a beautifully build modern mosque with space for nearly 20,000 worshippers. Almost 8,000 people can fit inside, and the courtyard can hold up to 12,000 more individuals. Sultan Qaboos Mosque is also one of the few mosques in Arabia that permits visits to non-Muslims.
The mosque is no less than a wonder for architecture. The interior perfectly clubs the Omani, Islamic, and Middle Eastern heritage. The main prayer hall
features an extravagant chandelier, intricately designed blue tiles, and the world’s second-largest Iranian rug. The rug is a rare and unique feature of the mosque – a famous tale behind it is that it took 600 women and four years to weave.
Mutrah Corniche
Mutrah Corniche is one of the liveliest places in all of Muscat. Its promenade stretches slightly over three kilometers and is lined up with cafes, restaurants, and markets. The views here are breathtaking. On one side, you can see a unique combination of white buildings backed by the Hajar mountains. On the other, you can view the picturesque Oman port and harbor.
Moreover, if you visit Mutrah Corniche, you cannot skip Mutrah Souq. Murah Souq is one of the oldest markets in Oman and the perfect shopping destination. You can find several antique goods to take back home. You might even find a few gems to give your family and friends at ridiculously inexpensive rates.
Mutrah Corniche is perhaps the best place in Muscat to meet and interact with locals. The location is a true reflection of the Arab heritage backed up by
stunning ancient buildings, streets, and crafts. It is one of the most safe and tidy corniches in the world.
Wadi Bani Khalid
Oman is home to some of the world's most spectacular and tourist-friendly wadis. The Wadi Bani Khalid remains as Oman’s top tourist favorite attraction. It is a breathtaking wadi surrounded by rugged mountains, tall palm trees, and sparkling clean green water.
What’s interesting about Wadi Bani Khalid is that it has a constant flow of water throughout the year, unlike other wadis that dry out in the summer. Wadi Bini Khalid is often endorsed as the desert of paradise because of the serene views accompanied by a rocky canyon and cliff of the Hajar mountains.
The wadi can be an excellent place to beat the heat, have a fun and relaxed family picnic, or go for a hike. It is located almost 2.5 km from Muscat and is a
favorite getaway spot for many.
The Royal Opera House
The royal opera house is one of Muscat's premium spots for music, art, and culture. It features an auditorium, landscaped garden, theatre, cultural markets, and an art center. Additionally, it can cater to almost 1100 people together and is known to be an excellent place for learning, inspiration, and entertainment.
The Royal opera house was built under the instruction of Sultan Qaboos of Oman in 2001 as he was known to be an art and culture fanatic. The opera house hosts several performances and education outreach programs from time to time. Moreover, the opera galleria accommodated a wide range of local and
international brands, cafes, and other dining options.
The royal opera house has a lot to offer under one roof, and you must add it to your list of places for your following Muscat holidays.
Yeti beach
If you are into beaches, your holidays to Muscat will remain incomplete without a visit to Yeti beach. Yeti beach is a short drive from Muscat but offers one of the most serene views in the country.
Surrounded by cliffs and covers, Yeti is one of the lesser-known beaches in Oman but makes a perfect spot for those looking for a quiet getaway. The waters are crystal clear, and you can easily swim, fish, and sunbathe. The site is becoming a famous station for campers where they pitch in tents overnight by the shore.
Bait Al Zubair
Bait Al Zubair was initially inaugurated to house priceless possessions of Sultani Chief Bait AL Zubair Ali but has now grown to be one of the most exclusive
museums in Muscat. It expands over three sections: the museum, an art gallery, and an Omani-style village. The village consists of houses, a falaj, and a Souq. The museum consists of the Zubair family’s finest collection of ancient artifacts, including weapons, kanjiras, jewelry, and household items. These items are known to be one of the most exquisite privately owned collections that offer a remarkable insight into the Arab culture.
Bait Al Zubair is a great place to visit with kids, family, or alone. The site is rich in ancient history and offers excellent education and learning experience. Visiting the museum can be a delightful way to spend time with friends and family, provoke your imagination, and learn historical lessons.
